10 Tips That Will Help You Become A Better Human

When it comes to self-improvement, there are seemingly endless resources available to help you get started on the right foot, but what’s truly effective? What doesn’t work? The following 10 tips are tried and true methods I’ve used to become the best human I can be, and I believe they can help anyone make small, lasting changes in their daily lives to make them feel happier and more fulfilled. Give them a try—you’ll be glad you did!

1) Be positive
While it’s tempting to dwell on our mistakes, what we can do instead is learn from them and try to use that knowledge to move forward in a positive way. And who knows? We might even end up making better decisions because of it. Self-improvement isn’t about creating perfection, it’s about being a better human. If you want to be better, let go of negativity and embrace positivity.

2) Write down your goals
Before you begin your quest to become a better human, write down what you hope to achieve. It could be as simple as get more sleep or as broad as improve my overall happiness. Be specific with your goals and stay positive! Remember, self-improvement is a marathon, not a sprint.

3) Sleep well
Most of us would love to sleep a little bit longer. We even tell ourselves that we'll get more done if we can do it after waking up early, but if you're looking to become a better human, wake up early. In his book Smarter Faster Better, psychologist and writer Charles Duhigg explains how setting your alarm for an earlier time will make you smarter and more successful overall. Here's why: Waking up at 5 a.m.

4) Wake up early
Though waking up early may seem counterintuitive to a better life, it’s actually a smart self-improvement strategy. Most of us live in a sleep-deprived state and function more poorly because of it. To create more me time and feel less stressed, try waking up an hour earlier than you normally would and use that extra time to exercise or meditate; both activities can make you feel more relaxed and balanced throughout your day.

5) Eat well
Studies show that people who eat well are happier, more energetic, and enjoy better health. I’m not saying you need to become a vegetarian or give up your favorite junk food forever—but if you’re looking for some solid self-improvement advice, consider starting by eating more healthfully. Check out these 10 tips to get started.

6) Exercise regularly
One of my favorite self-improvement writers is Tim Ferriss, who I’ve mentioned before as a great source for mental model inspiration. In his books The 4-Hour Workweek and Tools of Titans, he details many tips for living well and becoming a better human—and they work.

7) Keep learning
Reading is an excellent way to immerse yourself in new ideas and strategies. Almost any book, whether fiction or non-fiction, can offer insight into how to become a better human. If you don’t know where to start, consider picking up a copy of How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie—an oldie but goodie that is hands down one of my favorite reads on personal development.

8) Manage Stress Well
Managing stress well is a key self-improvement habit. In fact, it’s one of life’s most important skills! If you want to become a better human, you need to be good at managing stress. Here are 10 tips that will help make it happen

9) Get rid of negative people in your life
One of my favorite quotes is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: A man is what he thinks about all day long. Emerson is absolutely right: we become what we think about. Do you want to be a kind and caring person, or do you want to be cynical and angry? If you focus on that question for just a few minutes, you will probably find that it has already changed your outlook.

10) Help others too
Self-improvement is about helping others, too. For example, a reader of your self-improvement content may want to improve their work skills to be a better employee. Your posts can help with that.
